Learn to see before releasing the shutter

Hierarchy

A legible image proposes a path. Contrast, scale, sharpness, and isolation determine what appears first. Before adding elements, decide what deserves to dominate.

Balance and tension

Balance does not mean symmetry. A small bright mass can offset a large dark shape. Tension appears when that balance feels possible but not comfortable.

Exercise

Photograph the same scene centered and with the rule of thirds. Compare which communicates stability, which creates direction, and what each version leaves out.
